NORMA JEAN ATKINSON
past president
Norma Jean Atkinson has been a cornerstone of music education and arts leadership in Fort McMurray for more than 50 years. A dedicated music teacher, choir director, accompanist, and community volunteer, she is best known as the founder and longtime organizer of the Oilsands Rotary Music Festival which has inspired generations of young performers since its inaugural festival in 1976.
After moving to Fort McMurray in 1975 to teach with the Catholic school district, Norma Jean recognized the need for a local music festival where students could develop their skills and share their talents. What began as a three-day festival with just over 200 entries has grown into one of Alberta's largest music festivals. Throughout her career, she has also served as President of the Alberta Music Festival Association, directed numerous community and church choirs, supported countless local arts initiatives, and continues to share her love of music as a choir director and church musician. Norma Jean's vision, leadership, and unwavering commitment have helped shape Fort McMurray's vibrant musical community, leaving a lasting legacy that continues to inspire young musicians and music educators alike.
